Ten kilometers away from Óbidos, on the surroundings of a Roman bridge, a wine project and the fruits of a family’s vision prosper. Two estates crossing the border between the regions of Tejo and Lisboa. The first one is called Quinta da Escusa and the second Quinta do Porto Nogueira. The wines comprising them have conquered the most demanding wine aficionados, in and out of Portugal.
The place is Alguber, a small-town welcoming this project with open arms. Small, cozy, within a short distance of the country’s capital, the town of Óbidos and the Atlantic Ocean. In there, new vines grow by the use of a sustainable practice of agriculture, certified, which will, soon enough, become fully organic.
On the seventeen hectares of Quinta do Porto Nogueira, under the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, the castes of Sauvignon Blanc, Arinto, Encruzado & Chardonnay and Pinot Noir prevail. At the Quinta da Escusa, warmer, red castes take the lead. Touriga Nacional, Syrah, Alicante Bouschet, Sousão and Tinta Miúda are examples of it.
The grapes are selected with zeal and the process is progressed throughout the year, before and after the harvests. The aging of the wine is completed in French and American oak. The red wines have an additional aging period of six months inside the bottle.
The Portfolio displays accurately the search for perfection. Among the excellent and awarded wines from Quinta de Porto Nogueira (DOC Óbidos), it is worth to mention the Página Sauvignon Blanc with its tropical fruit’s aroma, the well-crafted wood, the contagious freshness and the right levels of acidity, turn the ending into a long and persistent journey. Quinta Nogueira Reserva Tinto, a blend of Touriga Nacional and Pinot Noir has an elegant aroma, a notorious freshness, fine tannins and a persistent ending. Among the Quinta da Escusa wines (DOC Santarém), we select the Quinta da Escusa Reserva Tinto, a blend of Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet, Sousão and Syrah, having conquered praises from The Wine Enthusiast, a Golden medal at the 2018 Portugal Wine Trophy and a Grand Gold Medal at the 2017 Portugal Wine Contest. With intense aromas of red fruits, mint and dark chocolate notes, this is a complex wine, unctuous, with soft tannins, balanced, with a long ending and a lot of persistence.
To a project regionally divided since day one, two names and two distinct terroirs, the least we could say about Casa Romana Vini’s masterful work is that we are dealing with a triumph in so many more ways than simply on the table.
