Between Seia and Gouveia, near de foothill of Serra da Estrela, Quinta da Ponte Pedrinha produces some of the most exemplar wines of the Dão Wine Region. For over three hundred years in the same family, the estate is proud of the range of vine varieties and the breathtaking sceneries that render speechless those who visit them.
Will the wines have a better aroma or be more tasteful if elaborated in outstanding beautiful places? In Quinta da Ponte da Pedrinha, Dão Wine Region, it is easy to believe that this happens. In breathtaking sceneries, highlighted by the ancient sunny manor, grow almost sixty hectares of vineyard, seven of which are over four decades old.
Here time seems to pass at a slow rhythm. All is stable and serene, just like the estate that rests in the hands of the same family since the 18th century – or like the wines that show a unique aging potential.
Where there is time for everything remains room for quality: for carefully chosen vine varieties, suitable for the granite soil and the conditions of the terroir - among the red, Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Tinta Roriz and Jaen; among the white, Encruzado, Cercial, Malvasia Fina, Verdelho and Bical. Such a profusion of aromas and flavors in this set of varieties! The red wines are full bodied and chewable, with good tannins, ready to age. The white ones are complex, fruity and aromatic. They all display a very balanced acidity and the unique freshness that can be found in the best wines of the region.
It does not come as a surprise for the growing number of connoisseurs that Quinta da Ponte Pedrinha would be considered a landmark of the Dão Wine Region. Its high quality portfolio, gastronomical profile and inviting prices are a symbol of the best the region has to offer.
Wine Contests and Magazines have never hesitated in rewarding the wines produced in Quinta da Ponte Pedrinha. From Quinta da Ponte Pedrinha Vinhas Velhas 2007 (90 points in Wine Enthusiast, Gold Medal in 50 Great Portuguese Wines for EUA) to Quinta da Ponte Pedrinha Reserva 2011 (Gold Medal in Concours Mondial de Bruxelles and Silver Medal in Mundus Vini), the wines of the winery stand as a vast repository of distinctions.
João Paulo Martins, in his most recent edition of Guia de Vinhos de Portugal, that has become indispensable for connoisseurs, distinguishes the 2012 red Touriga Nacional for the “very good harmony among the floral hints of the vine variety and the ripe fruit with god balance between color and concentration. Good presence in the mouth is elegant with fine tannins which allow a good tasting. It may (…) live a few good years in the cellar”.
The longevity of the Dão wines, the aromatic exuberance, and the balanced acidity are elements that characterize the wines of the winery and allow them to draw the gratifying appreciation of the oenophiles. For those who are honored with the privilege of visiting the place they are made in, that pleasure becomes a passion.
