Collection: Murgas Bucelas
About the Producer
Bucelas seems to once again occupy a prominent place, which once belonged, in the white wines national panorama. Bucelas and Arinto are a duo like nails and flesh that is a reason for renewed interest in its potential, whether by creative winemakers who extract and bottle the soul of this mosaic of terroirs in projects the size of a garage, or by large companies that in Bucelas they look out with the certainty that a trend will be there, not for the future, but for a lasting now.
With the same vision of quality and with the region in their veins, projects from people linked to this small region gain new impetus with the greater motivation of proving that the prestigious past was not far behind in time.
Anyone who appreciates white wines, and especially those made of Arinto, knows that there are many and all over the country, but like this one from Bucelas, nothing or nothing comes close to them, when tasting some wines that have survived the 80's or 90's decades of the last century, you get to know why they are knowned for the longevity.
Murgas, one of the most recent brands in Bucelas, comes to this business, with the purpose of showing the authentic Arinto de Bucelas, of extracting the most from it the particularities of a terroir that seems made to measure for the Arinto variety. And this is the work that the young João França proposed.
His childhood passion for the family estate, for the countryside, for the landscape where the vineyards predominated, the wine business was very important for the family and filled all the time he was on the estate. Equally strong was the relationship with his grandfather, from whom he inherited a taste for wine, accompanying him on his daily walks through the vineyard, helping with the harvest and being able to participate in conversations at the table, which led João França to develop a taste for quality wine and a taste to do it well.
João takes the first steps of a new generation in a family that has been making wine for many years in this region. And that's how, committed to expressing the region and the family's history, Murgas was born in 2017, the name of the Quinta (Estate) where the wine is produced. The idea is to do it well, not much, but good, niche-oriented and value-oriented.
With very old vines, a special terroir of stony limestone soils on steep slopes, but the final piece that would give the wine the maximum expression of all these conditions was missing. A winemaker who puts the essence and purity of the Arinto variety and place it in the bottle.
And it couldn't be in better hands with the highly reputed and more than skilled Bernardo Cabral. Coincidence or perhaps not, it was in Bucelas that he began his career as a professional in oenology and where he became aware of the excellence of the region's white wines. In fact, only the white wines are entitled to bear the DOC designation. Bernardo soon realized how extraordinary that terroir was, the symbiosis between the variety and the rocky soil, perfect for the classic and mineral profile that João and Bernardo intended for the wine. Acidity, one of the predicates of the Arinto variety, is taken to the maximum here, whether in terms of quality or quantity.
No matter the location of the vineyards, Arinto always ensures musts with a high acidity content, which makes it a very traveler variety, and is therefore present in all regions. Here, a pH of 3.1 is perfect for many, but not so, here it is rare and even considered too much. Careful vinification 20% fermented in used 350 liter barrels, Bernardo bought them from a friendly producer in Burgundy, where he aged for 8 months with the fine lees and the rest in stainless steel.
